Skiing with kids can be MAGICAL. The difference between magic and tears can be as simple as proper gear. Over the last 12 years of parenting and spending many cold winter days outside playing in the snow, we have the science down to insure that our girls stay warm.
1) Base layer- We want a warm comfortable base layer to wear under outer clothes. We have tried several different brands and types. We prefer a warm fleece base layer. My girls have used Spyder brand for the last two years and have been very happy. Link for top Link for bottoms
2) Gloves- Gloves are tricky. In years past we did not invest in proper gloves for our girls. It makes a significant difference in how long you can stay out in the cold if you have the right kind of gloves. We wear a thermal liner slim base glove (link here) and combined with leather mittens are the best way to stay warm. The mittens have separate finger grooves inside so it feels like you are wearing gloves, but doesn't allow the cold to seep in around each finger. (link)
3) Socks- Wool socks are the way to go. Recommended to wear one pair only and not layer (big kids) (toddler)
4) Neck Warmer- my girls prefer a thin fleece neck warmer. Even on warmer days 9 times out of 10 we grab a neck warmer. The ski lifts somehow feel 10 times colder when you are sitting there riding to the top and the wind always seems to be blowing even when there is no wind, haha. With skiing or sledding, my kids grab a neck warmer so they can pull it up over the lower half of their face and protect from the cold wind or snow. (link)
5) Outter shell- When my kids are little 0-6 we prefer to have them wear a one piece snowsuit. Easy access on and off. This also helps keep snow out of any crevices when they take a tumble. (link) When they progress we prefer a nice snow bibs and jacket. We invest in good quality suit (buy it big) and then my girls wear it 2-3 years. Ski jackets are not worn every day to school or to play with friends. They are saved for skiing or in times when we know they will be outside in the cold for extended periods. (pants) (jacket)
6) Helmet and Goggles- We 100% recommend a skiing helmet and goggles. Goggles help protect your eyes from the wind and snow. We purchased ours from Costco but here are some online resources. (helmet) (goggles).
7) Boots- we MUCH prefer a light weight boot. The brands like Sorel have a heavy boot and make walking a chore. These columbia boots are amazing for being light weight, keeping snow out, and staying warm. We also use cheap amazon options that accomplish the same goal (columbia link)
8) Other- We grabbed these on amazon and they make a big difference. Instead of fumbling to find your ski pass they quickly scan you and you are on your way. (pass holder)
Skiing vest for learners- This makes a huge difference when teaching little ones to ski. It has a handle that you can quickly lift them up with if they cross skis to ensure you both don't go plummeting and straps to whip out when they have progressed to skiing by themselves in front of you. (link).
Wedgie ski helper- when littles have progressed to skiing independently but are having a tough time keeping skies together this tool can help.(link)
